The nerve fiber layer of the retina includes ganglion cells are believed to be the earliest cells of the retina damaged by glaucoma.  Scanning Laser Polarimetry technology measures the extent of nerve fiber layer damage which can occur up to 6 years before visual field damage is evident.  This instrument represents a technological breakthrough in that it may actually identify a patient before they develop visual field loss from glaucoma.
