Areas of Teaching / Academic Specialty
I graduated from nursing school in 1974 and have taught nursing since 1996. Even though I was teaching full-time, I continued to work part-time as a Labor and Delivery nurse until 2006. My 32 years as a bedside nurse has brought me great value and intense pleasure that enhances my teaching. Both my clinical experience and my MSN as a Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist are the basis of my first academic specialty which is obstetrics.
The other area of interest has become nursing education itself. I have taught associate degree, undergraduates and accelerated students prior to coming to Ferris. Since I have been at Ferris I have been teaching the graduate students Nursing Education. While obstetrics is my love and what I enjoy teaching most, nursing education is becoming a close second.
Research / Scholarship
Research
My research interests include nursing education and nurse’s themselves. My dissertation is a qualitative study based on the work of Patricia Benner and her Novice to Expert Model. I am interviewing experienced Labor Room nurses and asking them about their experiences with women in pain in labor.
