KCAD Captures Top Juried
Awards at ArtPrize
Ferris State University and Kendall College of Art and Design once
again celebrated the creative spirit of ArtPrize, the international art
exhibition and competition that attracts hundreds of thousands of
people to downtown Grand Rapids each fall.
The 19-day event, which boasts the world’s largest art prize, awards
$560,000 in prizes — $360,000 by public vote and $200,000 in
The institutions have a significant, long-term commitment as an
ArtPrize Exhibition Center and Premier Leadership Sponsor,
providing exclusive sponsorship of the $100,000 Juried Grand
Prize through 2017.
Kendall was one of 169 venues that this year hosted 1,524 entries
in the contest, created five years ago by social media entrepreneur
Rick DeVos, the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Business and
Industry from Ferris in 2012.
“Designed to Win” was the theme of the 2013 ArtPrize exhibition at
KCAD. The exhibit, housed in the Woodbridge N. Ferris building at
17 Pearl St. NW, featured works by nine artists who focused on “how
we interact and engage with our environments and each other.”
The concept, curated by Michele Bosak and Sarah Joseph, was
validated by judges in the contest’s juried awards. KCAD was named
Outstanding Venue, and “Through the Skies for You,” by Kevin Cooley
and Philip Andrew Lewis, part of “Designed to Win,” won Best Three-
The Juried Grand Prize winner, “Ecosystem” by Carlos Bunga,
was featured at SiTE:LAB, a venue curated by KCAD professor
Several KCAD students, faculty and alumni also participated in the
event by entering their own works at various venues.
