He may be an old dog, but he
does a new trick every now and
then. Receiving nearly 50,000 fan
votes in six rounds of people’s
choice competition, Ferris’
Bulldog logo went on to do what
he has encouraged countless
Ferris student-athletes to do for
more than 30 years — win.
The poll, conducted online by the
Detroit Free Pres
s, not only pitted
the Bulldog logo against those
of other college athletics teams
but against such formidable
adversaries as the logos of the
Detroit Lions and Red Wings. Facing the iconic old English “D” of the
Detroit Tigers in the final bracket, the plucky Bulldog logo — with the
help of voters from across the Ferris community — took more than 59
percent of the vote, beating the Tigers’ logo by more than 3,600 votes.
“We thank the entire Bulldog Nation and all the Ferris State alumni for
their support and efforts in voting throughout this competition,” said
Jon Coles, associate Athletics director.
Active promotion in social media by a range of Ferris State entities,
including the Alumni Association, Athletics, Athletics Communications
and News Services helped in the win. Ferris’ external operations team,
led by Athletics Director Perk Weisenburger, extensively publicized and
promoted the competition.
The Bulldog logo was created in 1979 by Ferris alumnus Terry
Davenport, son of former Ferris Athletics Director Dean Davenport. In
2011, University Advancement and Marketing updated the logo to give
it greater visual impact in electronic and other new formats.
