Incoming Freshmen Scholarship Opportunities

Ferris State University is not responsible for the awarding or application processes associated with outside scholarship opportunities. Any questions or concerns you have relative to outside scholarships should be directed to the contacts listed on the scholarship description or application.


Academic Opportunity Scholarship

This scholarship is available to incoming freshmen in all majors with a minimum 3.00 high school GPA, that are also Michigan residents. *Preference given to minority students. A letter of recommendation from someone other than a relative must be submitted with application. An essay is also required - see application for details.

*This scholarship was available to students before the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI) , also referred to as Proposal 2, became law on December 22, 2006.

The award amount is $2,000 per year and is renewable.

Students wishing to be considered for this scholarship must be in Hotel Management/Restaurant & Food Industry Management. Students must also have a 2.0 minimum cumulative GPA.

 Canadian Lakes Scholarship for Mecosta County    Back to top

This scholarship will be awarded to a full-time undergraduate student residing in Mecosta County. Applicant must not be eligible for any of the Woodbridge N. Ferris Scholarships. Students wishing to apply for this scholarship are required to complete a FAFSA, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, and be enrolled full–time in an undergraduate program. Must have graduated from one of the following schools: Consortium College Preparatory High School, Allen Academy (both in Detroit, MI), Creative Technologies Academy (Cedar Springs, MI), Hope Academy of West Michigan, Lighthouse Academy (both in Kentwood, MI), Michigan Collegiate High School, (formerly Connor Creek in Roseville, MI), Clara B. Ford Academy (Dearborn Hts., MI), Michigan Connections Academy-Cyber School (Okemos, MI), and Marshall Academy (Marshall, MI).

Courtright, Edwin & Barbara    Back to top

Students wishing to apply for this scholarship are required to complete a FAFSA, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0, and be enrolled full–time in any Arts and Sciences undergraduate program. Preference given to students who are members of groups that are underrepresented at Ferris State University.

Detroit Compact Scholarship    Back to top

This is an outside scholarship* for full-time students enrolled in any major. To qualify, students must have a minimum composite score of 21 on the ACT entrance exam and a minimum of 3.0 high school GPA. Students are selected by the Detroit Compact Scholarship Incentive Program.

The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, up to 15 credits, and required fees to attend Ferris State University. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years as long as the student maintains a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and full-time continuous enrollment (at least 12 credit hours). To maintain eligibility for the Detroit Compact Scholarship, students must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress per the policy of the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Consideration is automatic upon admission.

Applicants for this scholarship must be enrolled in BSW Social Work Program and must have demonstrated financial need as determined by FAFSA completion. A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA is required.

Doke and Thomas Family Annual Scholarship   Back to top

Applicant must be a high school senior from Baldwin High School, who has been accepted and is enrolled and majoring in any program at Ferris State University. The recipient shall have a minimum 2.5 High School GPA at the time of application. The scholarship shall be awarded to a full-time or part-time undergraduate student.

The award amount varies per year and current recipients are eligible to reapply for the scholarship the next academic year.

Doke, Erick T. & Mary A. Annual Scholarship   Back to top

Applicant must be a high school senior from Big Rapids High School, who has been accepted and is enrolled and majoring in any program at Ferris State University. The recipient shall have a minimum 2.5 High School GPA at the time of application. The scholarship shall be awarded to a full-time or part-time undergraduate student.

Ferris Faculty Association–Russell Moffett Scholarship Back to top

Applicants for this scholarship must have earned a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or better. Children of Ferris State University employees who receive tuition waivers are ineligible. Selection of the recipient rests with the appropriate high school principal and/or his/her designee.

13/14 Academic Year - awarded to graduating seniors from Morley Stanwood High School and Chippewa Hills High School.

14/15 Academic Year - awarded to graduating seniors from Big Rapids High School and Reed City High School.

15/16 Academic Year - awarded to graduating seniors from Morley Stanwood High School and Chippewa Hills High School.

16/17 Academic Year- awarded to graduating seniors from Big Rapids High School and Reed City High School.

17/18 Academic Year- awarded to graduating seniors from Morley Stanwood High School and Chippewa Hills High School.

Ferris Foundation Need Based Scholarship    Back to top

Students wishing to apply for this scholarship are required to complete a FAFSA and be enrolled full-time in any undergraduate program. The scholarship is renewable provided the recipient remains a full-time undergraduate student and has demonstrated satisfactory academic progress as specified by the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid.

FIRST Robotics/First Tech Challenge    Back to top

Students wishing to apply for this scholarship must have served on an active duty status in the U.S. Armed Forces for a minimum of six continuous months, received “honorable” or “uncharacterized” separation, and enrolled at FSU within 4 years from separation. Open to all majors.

Hoffman, Orville    Back to top

To be eligible, a candidate for this scholarship must be a fully matriculated student in good standing at Ferris State University and if a freshman or sophomore, enrolled in a Bachelor of Science program leading to a degree in accountancy, or if a junior or senior, enrolled in the Accounting program. Students enrolled in the Masters in Accountancy program may also be eligible for the award if they were recipients of the scholarship as an undergraduate. Strong consideration will be given to students whose grade point average is 2.4 or better.

Jacobs, Todd & Tami Family Scholarship    Back to top

Preference given to any student from Hesperia Community Schools and enrolled in a Ferris degree program. Student must have demonstrated financial need by completing a FAFSA and must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at the time of application.

Students wishing to apply for this scholarship must be a graduate of a high school in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Must be enrolled full-time in any four year degree program.

Kauzlarich/Campana Family Scholarship

Students wishing to apply for this scholarship must be a full-time freshman undergraduate student majoring in any offered program at Ferris State University. Candidates shall have a demonstrated financial need as determined by the University's Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid.

Kelso Battle Scholarship    Back to top

This scholarship is for first-time freshmen accepted into one of the following programs: Industrial Environmental Health Management, Applied Mathematics, Biotechnology, Industrial Chemistry, Pre–Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or a two or four year degree program in the College of Engineering Technology. Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative high school GPA and ACT composite score of 26 or above.

The award amount is $4,000 per academic year and is renewable for 3 additional years provided the renewal criterion is met.

Mathematics Faculty & Staff Scholarship    Back to top

Full-time students majoring in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics with a GPA of 2.0 or higher will be considered. Students must have demonstrated financial need, as determined by the filing of a FASFA.

The award amount varies and may be considered for renewal.

All qualified students in Applied Mathematics or Mathematics programs will automatically be considered for this scholarship.

Mecosta County Medical Center Auxiliary Scholarship    Back to top

To apply for this scholarship, applicant must be enrolled in any program in the College of Health Professions. Applicant must also be a high school graduate from a school within the Mecosta-Osceola School District, such as Crossroads Charter Academy, Big Rapids, Chippewa Hills, Evart, Morley-Stanwood, and Reed City public schools. A minimum GPA of 3.0 must be held at the time of application. For incoming Freshmen, proof of GPA will be provided through official transcripts.

Students wishing to be considered for this scholarship must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in the Biology program. Students wishing to be considered for this scholarship must be enrolled in a PGA of America accredited Professional Golf Management Program. Must meet initial PGA PGM test scores only. Individuals who have taken retake tests are not eligible. Applicants must have successfully completed the Level 2 Checkpoint, passed the PAT, and have a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Totten, Joan E. Scholarship    Back to top

The scholarship will be awarded to a full–time undergraduate student majoring in any program in University College. The recipient shall have a minimum 3.0 GPA at the time of application. Special consideration should be given for students who have demonstrated music performance in high school or at Ferris State University. Preference shall be given to eligible students who demonstrate financial need determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid and have a minimum of 3.0 GPA at the time of application.

Vanderlaan Student Leadership & Service Award    Back to top

The scholarship will be awarded to a full–time student enrolled in any Arts & Sciences major with a minimum cum. GPA of 2.0. Students with leadership abilities will be considered.

Recipient will be selected from nominations submitted to the scholarship committee in the College of Arts and Sciences.


Wade H. McCree Scholarship    Back to top

Ferris State University awards five full-tuition Wade H. McCree scholarships per year. Students are selected and inducted into the program in their freshman year of high school by the Detroit Public Schools.

Students must have a high school grade point average of a 3.0 or higher and a minimum 21 ACT composite score at the end of their senior year.

Students in any major are eligible to receive the Wade McCree scholarship providing they maintain full-time continuous enrollment and satisfactory academic progress as defined by the University's SAP Policy.

Waters, Gary Men’s Basketball Scholarship    Back to top

The scholarship will be awarded to a FSU men's basketball team member. Must be dedicated to the success of the FSU men’s basketball program, and conduct themselves as ambassadors of the FSU basketball program at all times. Students are also required to complete a FAFSA.

Award amount is approximately $1,000 and is non–renewable.

Scholarship recipient shall be made by the head basketball coach.


Woodbridge N. Ferris Scholarships    Back to top

Ferris State University offers several scholarship opportunities to first-time attending freshmen based on their high school GPA and their ACT or SAT scores. To maintain eligibility for the WNF Scholarships, students must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress per the policy of the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
