Miles J. Postema serves as the University's Vice President and General Counsel. He began his employment with Ferris State University in February, 2000 as Deputy General Counsel. He possesses a broad range of legal experience in general business and transactional matters as well as commercial litigation with an emphasis on employment law. Miles began his legal career at Warner Norcross & Judd specializing in general business and commercial litigation with an emphasis in employment law (1987-1989). Miles was most recently a partner at Tolley VandenBosch Walton Korolewicz & Brengle, P.C. (now known as Foster Swift Collins & Smith) in Grand Rapids, Michigan (1989-2000) where he handled general business and transactional matters and commercial litigation with an emphasis in employment law. He also served on the firm's Executive Committee.
Miles is a Western Michigan University graduate and obtained his Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University where he participated in Moot Court and was a member of The Wayne Law Review. He also has a Master of Science in Taxation from Grand Valley State University.
Miles is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan, Grand Rapids Bar Association, Mecosta-Osceola Bar Association, the National Association of College and University Attorneys, and the American Corporate Counsel Association. He is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Eastern and Western District of Michigan. Miles is a past Chair of the Public Outreach Committee of the State Bar of Michigan. He is a former Chairman of the State Bar of Michigan Communications Committee; Past Chair of the Law Practice Management Section of the State Bar of Michigan; former member of the State Bar of Michigan Publications and Website Advisory Committee; and Former Co-chair of the Community Relations Committee of the Grand Rapids Bar Association.
Miles was a past President of the Mecosta-Osceola County Bar Association and Secretary of the Grand Rapids Bar Association. Miles is a board member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, serves as Chair of their Committee for Continuing Legal Education, and is a member of their Board Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusivity. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Chapter of the American Corporate Counsel Foundation and in 1994, was appointed a Fellow in the State Bar of Michigan Foundation.
In October of 2004, Miles was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Rockford School Board. In May of 2005, he was elected to a four-year term, and served as President in 2009. In May of 2009, he was re-elected Trustee on the Rockford School Board where he currently serves as Secretary. Miles is a graduate of Leadership Mecosta (2001), and is active in several other groups and organizations.
