Honors Events

The Honors Program puts on a number of events through the year. Here is the approximate schedule.  Check the Honors Program Calendar for upcoming events.

Event Approximate time Description
Fall Awards Banquet Around Homecoming Evening awards banquet, at which we recognize students who earned a 4.0 in the previous Spring, as well as individual students for outstanding leadership and outstanding service.
Variety show Fall semester, usually around Thanksgiving Fund raiser put on by the Honors Programming Board where honors students showcase their talents. Prizes for crowd favorite and judges' favorite.
Honors Speech Contest Fall semester, usually around Thanksgiving Organized by the Communication department, a public speaking contest for Honors students enrolled in COMM121: Public Speaking Honors during that semester. Those enrolled in Spring semester can participate in the University-wide speech contest.
MHA retreat First week of October Retreat for Honors student leaders to the Michigan Honors association leadership development conference.
Art Show Last week of January / First week of February Concurrent with the launch of Big Rapids Festival of the Arts, show of art work by current students in Honors of any major. Prizes for crowd favorite and juror's favorite.
Spring Social Spring Semester Honors Programming Board creates a spring event every year. In 2016, it was 'Campus Quest', an 'Amazing-race' style competition for teams of two to collect clues and solve puzzles around the Ferris campus.
Senior Symposium Last week of classes in Spring Term Poster session for graduating seniors to present their capstone work.
Spring Awards Banquet / Senior Send-off Last day of exams / night before commencement Final ceremony of the year. Students earning a 4.0 in Fall semester are recognized, as are award winners.  Graduating seniors receive medallion, Outstanding Professor recognized and Honors Outstanding Scholar delivers keynote address.
Lunch and Learns Most Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11a.m. throughout the academic year Presentations by various faculty, students, and community members to honors students on topics that include student and faculty research, study abroad, RSO information, degree programs, course offerings, test prep, study habits, and much more. Jets pizza is provided for those who attend.
Days of Service and Learning  Multiple events running from mid-September until the beginning of October Community outreach events where Honors students participate in service projects throughout the Big Rapids and central Michigan community. Previous community partners include The Red Cross, Angels of Action, Department of Health and Human Services, Our Brother's Keeper, Barryton Mobile Food Pantry, Artworks, Cran-Hill Ranch, Girl Scouts of Michigan, Big Rapids Community Library, Camp Newaygo, and WISE.
