I graduated from Ferris State University in May of 2005 with a B.S. in Public Relations. Looking back on my four years as an undergrad, I can honestly say that they were some of the best times of my life (thus far, of course!)
Ferris wasn't my first choice school. It wasn't even my second choice school. It was my safety school that my parents made me apply to. I have Maude and Tammy to thank for getting me to Ferris. Even though I kept resisting, and was dead set on attending school out of state, they kept calling me and asking me to reconsider and visit campus. It was their persistence, willingness to help and Maude telling my parents that "if you can just get her here for a semester, I promise she'll love it" that got me to Big Rapids. I thought that I would hate it, but with each day that passed, I loved it more and more. That personal attention and contact even before I was an official student went a long way to winning me over, and is truly indicative of how the Honors Program operates. Many of my friends to this day are people that I met in Honors. Living in Carlisle Hall will always be one of my fondest memories from college.
Being able to contrast Ferris State with a large Division I school in Bowling Green, I've come to appreciate the small class sizes and the personal interaction I received at Ferris even more than I already did. Every step of the way, there was someone there to support me, give advice or provide assistance. I was able to get really involved on campus in everything from varsity track to student government to a social Greek letter organization. I also had the opportunity to work as a resident advisor for two years and to represent Ferris State on the 2004 Homecoming court. I probably would not have been able to participate in all of those activities had it not been for the connections that I made by being a part of the Honors Program.
Those connections have served me well in my post college experiences. I have recently accepted a position with the University of Michigan as an admissions counselor at its Flint campus. My great experiences in post secondary education -- both on a personal and academic level -- have prepared me immeasurably for the beginning of my career and for the continuation of my education. I plan on pursuing my MBA within the next couple of years and know that Ferris has prepared me to excel in even the most rigorous of programs. I couldn't have asked for a better education. I am extremely proud to tell people that I am an alumna of Ferris State University, and I have the Honors Program to thank for that!
